Goodbye NICU

December 30, 2013

"Your sweet baby boy is coming home today" Jeff said to me from the doorway of the bathroom as I was finishing my makeup. I replied "Yes, there is a chance" knowing that Will did a great job eating yesterday and trying to not get my hopes up that he would be discharged that day. Jeff then said "No, really...your baby boy is coming home today. I just got a call from St. Joes and he gets to come home". Tears started streaming down my face..Will was coming home! Jeff and I started to pack a going home outfit and a blanket for the car seat and unpacked the things we needed to keep us busy at the hospital all day. We left the house to make the trip to The St. Joes NICU for the last time.

Once we arrived at the NICU we went about the usual routine. We woke Will up to change his diaper and then fed him. Then we got to change him into his going home outfit! We dressed him in a newborn outfit with a giraffe on the front. We chose something gender neutral so that if Will ever has a sibling he or she can wear the same thing home.

At this point it was a waiting game until the doctor came to officially discharge William. To fill the time we took our last pictures as a family in the waiting room and practiced putting our little man in the car seat.

The doctor came and went over various things regarding Will's care that are unique because he is a preemie. After about 15 minutes...it was official! Will was on his way home!
